Opened in 1991, this is the newest of three detention facilities in Contra Costa County.  West County Detention Facility (WCDF), located in Richmond, is a direct supervision jail designed to operate as a co-educational, program-oriented facility.

The facility houses up to 1,096 inmates within the confines of five separate housing units; four for males, one for females.  Each housing unit has a dedicated outside courtyard for recreational activities.

Inmates have the ability to leave the housing units and walk freely to attend various educational or vocational programs or classes, religious services, medical or dental appointments, or social visits with family and friends.

Inmates have the opportunity to work in the kitchen and laundry where they gain valuable experience and skills in culinary arts, safe food handling, and commercial laundering.

Educational and vocational programs are provided through a contract between the Office of the Sheriff and the Contra Costa County Office of Education. The Office of Education maintains a full-time on-site Adult School staff comprised of a principal, numerous teachers, and administrative professionals.
