  • Deputy Sheriff: This exciting and challenging career path offers applicants a wide range of specialties. After completing 26 weeks in the Peace Officer Standards and Training course, you will be sworn in as a Peace Officer and begin your journey as a deputy in the Patrol Division or Custody Service Bureau. We offer a $3000 hiring bonus for lateral recruits from other police jobs in CA.
    The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff is seeking men and women interested in an exciting and challenging career in law enforcement. Prior law enforcement experience is not required. Individuals who are appointed as Deputy Sheriff-Recruit will be assigned to attend our Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) approved police academy, which involves 26 weeks of intensive academic instruction combined with rigorous physical fitness training. Upon successful completion of the Academy, recruits will graduate and be sworn in as Peace Officers and promoted to the first step of Deputy Sheriff. Academy graduates are initially assigned to the Custody Services Bureau.

    Current California peace officers and academy graduates are encouraged to apply as lateral candidates. Lateral applicants may be hired at a higher step and receive bonuses depending on experience. The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff is currently offering a $3,000 Hiring Bonus for Laterals.

  • Reserve Deputy Sheriff:  Are you looking for a way to serve your community alongside your career? Contra Costa County's Reserve Deputy Sheriffs are part-time peace officers trained to the same standards as Deputy Sheriffs. You will act as a liaison between the Office of the Sheriff and the community while responding to many of the same lifesaving emergency calls as full-time sheriffs and providing security to major county events.

    Deputy Sheriff Reserves are citizen-volunteers who give their time to increase the safety and security of their community. They are professionals in both their full-time jobs and their part-time career with the Office of the Sheriff. Reserve Deputies take great pride in the organization and the services that they provide. Reserve Deputies respond to calls for service, transport arrestees, save lives and assist with emergencies.

    Deputy Sheriff Reserves are California Sworn Reserve Peace Officers that are trained at or above the state POST Standards. If you are interested in volunteering your time to protect and serve your community, we want to talk to you. We are hiring Level III, II, and I Reserves.

  • Dispatcher: Dispatchers undergo intensive training for radio and telephone duties, focused on providing the fastest and most effective response possible for emergency calls. This fast-paced civilian position in the Office of the Sheriff is responsible for coordinating the location and activities of multiple police units while monitoring the phones and radios for additional calls.

    The Office of the Sheriff is seeking men and women interested in an exciting and challenging career in dispatching. Prior experience is not required. Sheriff's Dispatchers perform a full range of radio and telephone duties. They receive, assess, prioritize and classify calls for service on a variety of emergency and non-emergency phone lines, including 911, from a population totaling 450,000 residents in 12 police jurisdictions. They also dispatch calls for service to police units, process computer inquiries and other requests for units in the field, and accurately track the activities of multiple police units.

    Applicants selected as Sheriff's Dispatcher I undergo six weeks of intensive classroom instruction on topics such as radio codes, phonetic alphabet, criminal law, call-taking, and Computer Aided Dispatch system. This is followed by 8-12 weeks of live call-taking and if successful, 3-4 months of live radio training under the supervision of a Communications Training Officer. Upon successful completion of the training process, they are promoted to Sheriff's Dispatcher II.
