Our office operates 24 hours day, 365 days a year and is comprised of 6 full-time investigators who are supported by professional staff. We are an investigative unit responsible for determining the cause and manner of death on all deaths covered under California Government Code section 27491 and California Health and Safety Code Section 10250.
Medicolegal death investigations are conducted throughout our county on homicides, suicides, accidents, suspicious and unexpected deaths. Other duties include notifying the next of kin, safeguarding personal property, the collection of evidence, processing death certificates and overseeing indigent burials.
Our Division is also proactive in the community participating in programs geared towards educating our youths in the importance of preventing impaired driving and drug use; identifying consumer products causing fatal injury and providing educational services for medical and law enforcement professionals.
We also have established cooperative relationships with non-profit organ and tissue procurement agencies to enhance the quality of life and save lives. Our Office participates in problem-solving groups that assist in reducing deaths related to child abuse, elder abuse, prescription drug abuse and fetal infant death syndrome, and suicide prevention.
