The City of Lafayette has contracted with the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff for police services since its incorporation in 1969.

The City's Police Chief is a Sheriff's Lieutenant who is selected by the city to serve as their manager for police services in the community.

The Lafayette Police Department consists of one Lieutenant, two Sergeants and 14 Deputies who provide 24 hour police services to the incorporated portions of the City. Deputies assigned to the contract perform a wide range of police services such as traffic, patrol, and investigative functions as a stand-alone police department.

The Police Chief reports to the City Manager and is responsible for police operations within the City following the policies of the Sheriff's Office. 

The police department is supplemented with six city employees who provide community services, parking enforcement, and crime scene investigation support to the department. The City maintains a fleet of patrol vehicles and police motorcycles that are used by deputies assigned to the contract.
